So I have this amazing teacher, k? I've taken a couple classes from her, and this semester has just amazed me. Let me give you a background on her, she's taught school for years. All different grades. She's been in administration for years. She knows her stuff, and has many many MANY wonderful stories, analogies & knowledge about the education system.. It's inspiring! d I'm taking a educational psychology class from her right now.
Today, we talked about three words.
Post Conventionalism
Conventialism
Pre-Conventionalism
Let me break this down, short form.
Basically Post Conventionalism is doing things for others, with no intent of reward or gift. Doing something for the sole purpose of the act.[Ex. opening the door for someone for the act of doing it, regardless of a thank you]
Conventionalism- Doing something for someone on account of "that's how it's supposed to be" or that's how society see's fit. [Ex. Going the Speed limit, because it's the law]
Pre-Conventionalism- Doing something for the sole purpose of self. [Ex. Letting someone borrow something because it makes you look like a nice person..]
We watched the saddest movie today. It was about a family; a mom, dad and son. The dad and 3 year old son had a strong bond with one another. One day, the dad left the son to go fix the bridge (turn it around so the trains could come in..-it's an old movie-) So while he is trying to turn the bridge around so it can align with the train tracks, the train starts to come. The connection isn't quite there, so he gets a crow bar and sticks it into place. Done. Safe. Right as this is happening, the son comes down the train track looking for his dad. The dad see's his son is about to get hit by the train, but he knows if he lets go of the crow bar to save his son, the train on the track will come un-done and the people on the train will die. He holds to the crow bar and watches his 3 year old son get hit by the train. What would have you done in the situation? Saved your son, or saved the hundreds of people of whom you don't know? If that is the ultimate post-conventialist act we can do, do I want to do all my acts that way? Everything for the sake of others?
We compared it to the Father, and how he gave his only Son for all of us to live. I left class with a feeling of gratitude for that act. Jesus is the Christ, and he is there for us. Always. There for us to ask for things, there for us to tell him about our day, and there for us when we need to start over.
Going to a church school is a blessing. The rules of no flip flops, no capri's/shorts, in by midnight and the many others are only small things when it comes down to it. Being able to have discussions like this during school is what it's all about, and it's remarkable, that's all.
