On another note, this week has been looooooong! :) Wednesday I had my state literacy test, which I had to stay on cam,pus all day for because it wasn't until 5. Yesterday, Wade participated in a conference to present his research paper. He didn't place, but he did so well presenting. Proud wife moment right here! We didn't get home until almost 8:30 last night. 12 hours on campus is way to long! Then today, I have the 2nd part of my literacy test, so wish me luck! It doesn't start til 5, and so I'm going to catch up on homework (which always leads me to this little space...) and then go take it..hopefully can find a ride back to Idaho falls today, since Wade has to work haha... I'll be so glad when this week is over! I should be done with all my finals for my classes by Wednesday, then have a week break before the next semester will start.
So, I'm in a special Education class right now, and over the course of the semester, we have had to do different simulation activities. There was the wheelchair simulation where we had to go around in a wheelchair for 4 hours of the day. The next was a simulation where you had to wear different masks that had certain holes cut out of them. For example, one eye hole was taped over, and the other was taped over with a little hole punched out of it...and so on, there were 4 different masks. The next two were kind of ridiculous and I'm just wondering if it was just me or.....IS THIS NOT SERIOUSLY WRONG!?? I'm going to copy them out of the syllabus, so you can see what I'm talking about:
Your assignment is to complete two of the following activities or
something comparable. While carrying them out, you must employ stuttering
behavior (whole word repetitions, blocks, prolonged interjections, and/or part
word repetitions). You must maintain the behavior through-out the task.
- While stuttering order a book or request help or something else you need with a live person at help desk or at a service counter.
- While stuttering ask for help at a store….and then ask the clerk/sales person 1-2 questions about the item you are shopping for.
- Go to a restaurant, order at least one item and then ask 1-2 questions to the server about the item.
- While stuttering ask for directions to a location. Repeat back part of the directions for clarification.
- While stuttering ask for help at the library. Repeat back part of the directions for help to ensure clarification.
- Stutter while checking out at Wal-Mart (or similar store). Ask them a question about your order.
AND THEN:
Your assignment is to do two of the following activities or
something comparable. While carrying them out, you must not use any words
with an l or an n. You can revise what you say or use different words, but can not use a word with an /l/ or /n/
letter in them. You must maintain
the behavior through-out the task.

- Ask for help at a store….and then ask the clerk/sales person 1-2 questions about the item you are shopping for.
- Go to a restaurant, order at lest one item and then ask 1-2 questions to the server about the item.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS IS WRONG? this girl in my class and I were talking about it and no one else really seemed to care or say anything?. It's been driving me crazy ebcause the assignment is due this week, and I've only done the wheelchair and visual, and don't have any intentions of doing the other two...??!
What do you think???

I get where you're coming from. But I think the point is probably to get you to understand how the people with problems feel in every day life so your more sympathetic when you have to actually deal with it. But I totally get that that could really offend someone
Omg I totally see it from your side! If I were in class with you I would also be like "whaaaa???" Plus how do you come up with it say sentences without I's or n's? And if you think of something on the spot how do you do that?? I am not smart enough for that kind of thing!
If you're not comfortable imitating handicapped people that is your right. You've completed enough of the tasks to determine how it made you feel and if it felt wrong don't do it.
Can I tell you a dirty secret? I skipped every simulation activity. You never have to say if you did it or not. I would have been honest, because there was nothing I wanted to do less. So I just didn't do it. I wrote the paper with my group at the end, because I'm not stupid enough to be unable to imagine what it would feel like, and I called it good. Maybe I should have told you that at the end of the semester, so you wouldn't be tempted =) Just don't tell Sister Anderson, in case she's your teacher. She's my favorite and I wouldn't want to hurt her feelings!
Yeah I would not feel comfortable with that. I get how they want you to understand where those people come from but its basically lying and I couldn't keep it together. I would just feel like the biggest jerk/idiot especially if people around me actually have an issue or have a family member or friend that has an issue. I wouldn't do it. I'd just say sorry and mark me down but I'm not doing that. Couldn't you just kind of shadow someone instead and be like a "helper" or something to someone instead of trying to mimic a person with special needs? Just seems like there is another way you can "walk in their shoes."
